Chief Surgeon of the Amsel Clinic

Dr. Ilmar Kaur (b. 1974) is a general surgeon by profession and specializes in weight and thyroid surgery. Dr. Kaur is the founder of Weight Surgery Center and Amsel Clinic. The Weight Surgery Center, which performs gastric bypass operations, is the largest in its field in Estonia, the Baltics and Finland. Also, Dr. Kaur, founder and head of the Estonian Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Society. Dr. Kaur started her surgical career at the Northern Estonia Regional Hospital, where she acquired excellent skills in laparoscopic, endocrine, gastrointestinal oncology and emergency surgery. In addition to surgery, Dr. Kaur has extensive experience in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Dr. Kaur is an internationally recognized surgeon who is treated by people from Estonia, Finland, Scandinavian countries, Great Britain, Iceland and further afield. According to Dr. Kaur, a surgeon’s job is not just to operate on a patient and then quickly walk through the ward. “More than half of my work is communicating with patients, delving into their problems, finding the best solution and getting feedback. After all, decisions are made together with the patient,” explains Dr. Kaur. Dr. Kaur is the founder and head of the Estonian Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Society, founded in 2011. In 2017, the Regional Hospital of Northern Estonia, under the leadership of Dr. Ilmar Kaur, received the accreditation of the international weight surgery training center “Center of Excellence” and regularly conducted international weight surgery trainings for surgeons, anesthesiologists and bariatric nurses from different countries under the guidance of Dr. Kaur. Currently, Dr. Kaur conducts international courses at the Weight Surgery Center. “We are the largest bariatric surgery clinic in the Baltic countries and Finland, and we have experience to share,” says Dr. Kaur. Among her voluntary activities, Dr. Kaur herself considers her activity as an international instructor of the ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) training program to be the most important. The goal of the ATLS program is to improve and standardize the primary care of severe trauma patients worldwide. Dr. Ilmar Kaur has trained in several centers of excellence in surgery in Sweden, Belgium, Lithuania, Finland, Germany, USA and Norway. Dr. Kaur has published several articles and held numerous lectures and organized trainings on weight surgery.

1992 – 1999 University of Tartu, Faculty of Medicine.
1999 – 2004 residency in general surgery (University of Tartu).
2003 residency in general surgery at Sundsvall Hospital, Sweden.

Career

2004 – 2009 General surgeon at North Estonia Regional Hospital.
2009 – 2011 Senior doctor in the specialty of general surgery and bariatric surgery at North Estonia Regional Hospital, Tallinn.
2011 – 2018 Chief surgeon of the Department of General and Weight Surgery at North Estonia Regional Hospital, Tallinn.
2018 – 2023 Senior doctor in the specialty of general and weight surgery at the Northern Estonian Regional Hospital.
From 2012 to today, chief surgeon of the Weight Surgery Center, Bariatric Services AS.
