Ilmar Kaur, MD

Dr. Ilmar Kaur (born in 1974) is a general surgeon specializing in bariatric and thyroid surgery. Dr. Kaur is the founder of Bariatric Services AS and Amsel Clinic. The Bariatric Services AS is the largest weight loss surgery center in Estonia, the Baltics and Finland. He is also a founding member and head of the Estonian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. Dr. Kaur started his surgical career at the Northern Estonian Medical Centre, where he acquired excellent laparoscopic skills and performed bariatric, endocrine, gastrointestinal oncological and emergency surgeries. In addition to surgery, Dr. Kaur has extensive experience in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Dr. Kaur is an internationally recognized surgeon who has treated patients from Estonia, Finland and other Scandinavian countries, Great Britain, Iceland and further. According to Dr. Kaur, a surgeon’s job is not just to operate on a patient. “More than half of my work is communicating with patients, delving into their problems, finding the best solution and getting feedback. After all, decisions are made together with the patient,” explains Dr. Kaur. Dr. Kaur is the founder and head of the Estonian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, established in 2011. Through Dr. Kaur’s continuous work in bariatric surgery, in 2017 the Northern Estonian Medical Centre received the accreditation “Center of Excellence” of the international bariatric surgery training and regularly organized bariatric training for surgeons, anesthesiologists and bariatric nurses from different countries. Currently, Dr. Kaur organizes international courses at the Bariatric Services AS. “We are the largest bariatric surgery clinic in the Baltic countries and Finland, and we have experience to share,” says Dr. Kaur. Among his voluntary activities, Dr. Kaur considers being an international instructor of the ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) training program to be the most important. The goal of the ATLS program is to improve and standardize the primary care of severe trauma patients worldwide. Dr. Ilmar Kaur has trained in Centers of Excellence in surgery in Sweden, Belgium, Lithuania, Finland, Germany, USA and Norway. Dr. Kaur has published several articles and held numerous lectures and organized trainings on weight loss surgery.
